POLICE DEPARTMENT
UNIFORMED PATROL
The Patrol Division is the "backbone" of the Department, by responding to calls for police service in the City of Mansfield. The Patrol Division consist of uniformed officers that are first responders to 911 calls and complaints from citizens to insure public safety. Patrol Division is tasked in enforcing criminal laws, traffic laws, city ordinances, and maintaining public peace and safety.
MOUNTED PATROL
The Mounted Patrol Unit was instituted formally in the winter of 1999 - 2000. The unit rides horses and are utilized for ceremonial occasions, park patrol, and other patrol functions where there is a need for an officer to have the ability to patrol in a quiet fashion, but still maintain the ability to make a fast response. The unit brings a bit of history to the current times. The unit always receives a warm reception from the public.
The unit has been used in the Home Town Celebration, National Night of Prayer at Rose Park, Christmas in the Park, MISD Field Days at the local parks, and many other functions within the city. The horses are able to take officers through trails connecting the city parks where conventional patrol cannot go. This has assisted the Department when the unit finds truant children hiding deep in the parks and to prevent criminal activity.
BIKE PATROL
The Bicycle Patrol Unit was organized in 1997. The unit is instrumental in getting patrol officers to locations rapidly where an officer in a vehicle could not go and where an officer on foot would not be able to respond quickly. The bicycles are quiet and permit the officer to patrol and yet be able to hear the sounds around more acutely. The unit is very helpful during public functions such as the Hometown Celebration and Christmas in the Park.
The stealthness and close contact of the officer with the neighborhood was born out past year when Officer Wing was riding his bicycle through one of our neighborhoods when he observed a suspect smoking marihuana in their backyard. This resulted in an investigation and ultimately an arrest. The Unit has also had a great deal of success in several neighborhoods with long-standing traffic complaints, where they could hide and observe violators, and yet quickly overtake the violator's vehicle and make a traffic stop.
K9 UNIT
Mansfield Police Department's K9 Unit consists of Officer Brandon Kramer and Police Service Dog "Bandit". Bandit, a Belgium Malinois, was born on May 5 2006 in Holland by the name of FOX BO MA LI and was purchased by the City of Mansfield on October 3, 2008. Officer Kramer was indroduced to Bandit at that time in New Market, AL where he spent two months training with Bandit. Officer Kramer and Bandit were trained in Patrol and Narcotic Detection at Kasseburg Kennels in New Market Alabama.
Officer Kramer and Bandit are assigned to the Patrol Division and are available 24 Hours a day.
RESERVE OFFICERS
The Department currently has a Reserve Unit which consists of volunteers from the community who assist the department in various capacities. The officers of this unit are not employees of the city, but nevertheless have taken the trouble to attend police training academies and pass the licensing exam of TCLEOSE. They are licensed Peace Officers and sworn members of the Department, who are provided uniforms, but purchase and maintain most of their equipment and must keep up with their own continuing education requirements.
The Unit has been a tremendous benefit to the Department during city and community events by directing traffic, manning stationary posts, and patrolling in order to assist regular patrol officers. When the city had the unfortunate circumstance to be hit by a tornado in 2001, the reserve officers were there to help support the Department in maintaining order and assisting citizens
