FIRE DEPARTMENT
TECHNICAL RESCUE
The Mansfield Fire Department specializes in various forms of rescue. Probably the most used forms of rescue involve vehicle extrications and swift water rescue.
All fire personnel maintain annual training in these rescue areas. We have a team of 11 members certified in swift water rescue. This team provides training to the remaining members to serve as a support team when water rescue is involved. All members have training on extrication of patients from vehicles. Equipment is carried on each apparatus to perform this type of rescue.
Technology is todays fire service is improving every year. In the event of rescue situations where it is difficult to see because of smoke or darkness, each apparatus carries a lifesaving piece of equipment.
The device is a thermal imaging camera. It is able to penetrate through the smoke and darkness to show the images of furntiure, walls and people. It will detect the heat from these items and transfer that image to the screen. It is invaluable to finding missing or trapped persons in a fire. The camera is used daily to locate the fire and disclose hidden fires or hot spots in walls.
The department also has personnel trained in:
- Bomb recognition
- Vehicle Extraction
- Water Rescue
- Weapons of mass destruction
- Trench rescue
- High angle rescue
- Hazardous materials
The department maintains equipment to help start rescue or containment operations but is limited to being able to fully handle the incident without the support of mutual aid companies from Arlington or Fort Worth Fire Departments.
