FIRE DEPARTMENT
TECHNICAL RESCUE
The Mansfield Fire Department specializes in various forms of rescue. Probably the most used forms of rescue involve vehicle and machinery extrications and swift water rescue.
All fire personnel maintain annual training in these rescue areas. We have a team of 15 members certified in swift water rescue. This team provides training to the remaining members of the department to serve as support when water rescue is involved. All members have training on extrication of patients from various types of vehicles and machinery. Equipment is carried on each apparatus to perform this type of rescue.
Technology in the fire service is improving every year. In the event of rescue situations where visibility is reduced because of smoke or darkness, a thermal imaging device provides the ability to detect changes in temperature through smoke to show images of furniture, walls and victims. It is invaluable to finding missing or trapped persons in a structure fire or at night out in the open at a wreck scene. The Thermal Imaging Camera is also used to locate the fire and disclose hidden hot spots within walls and other void spaces of a structure.
The department has personnel trained and certified in the following special operations disciplines:
- Bomb and Explosive recognition
- Weapons of Mass Destruction
- Swift Water Rescue
- Structural Collapse
- Trench Rescue
- Rope Rescue
- Hazardous Materials
- Confined Space Rescue
- SWAT Medic
- EMS Cyclist (Bike Medic)
- Vehicle and Machinery Rescue
