City Offers Household Hazardous Waste Dropoff

The City will be conducting 2 household hazardous waste dropoffs this year. The first will be held Saturday, May 31 at City Hall, 1200 E. Broad St. Residents who have old fertilizers, paint, solvents, pesticides, batteries, and other hazardous materials are encouraged to safely bring those materials to City Hall where they will be picked up the Crud Cruiser and taken for proper disposal or recycling. This is a popular event and will be held on a first come first served basis. The collection will begin at 9 a.m.

In addition to hazardous materials, the City is offering free disposal of electronic wastes, old computer equipment, handhelds and cellphones will be accepted. Electronic wastes represent a growing concern. Many of the materials are toxic when released into the environment, and shipping of these materials overseas is becoming a huge problem. Since much of the materials they contain are recyclable, it is important that they be disposed of properly.

New this year, the City will also accept used cooking oil that will eventually be turned in to biodiesel. Cooking oil and grease poured down the sink causes blockages and backups, and can even lead to pipe corrosion. All of these problems lead to raw sewage getting out into our environment. Bringing these materials to City Hall for recycling helps to keep your pipe clean and clear and creates a valuable petroleum alternative, without raising the costs of crops. You can't beat a deal like that. For more information about the dropoff, please click here to view a brochure. For questions about any of these services, please call 817-276-4240.
